Gabriel Garcia Marquez is consider one of the greatest writers in the history of Latin America, and also one of the most brilliant writers of the twentieth century. He was awarded with the novel prize of literature in 1982, but has not influenced many writers because his works have not been exposed for a long period of time and because he is still a writer of the present, in a time that not that many writers have flourished. One author that for a fact he has influenced is Isabel Allende, who also adopted the technique of magical realism in her works, as it can be observed in The House of the Spirits.

Although his works have not been exposed for enough generations to influence others, Garcia Marquez reveals that he was influenced by many writers from past generations such as Kafka with The Metamorphosis, in a translation by Jorge Luis Borges, and his mother with her stories. He now recognizes other authors and political figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Dick Tracy, Fidel Castro and others to have influenced his writings. Furthermore, Shakespeare also influenced him with Oedipus Rex, which the theme of fatality and destiny he applied to Chronicle of a death foretold.

As new generations of authors are born and become exposed to the magnificent works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez they will be influenced by his magic. For now Gabriel Garcia Marquez has had a great impact in society with his unique works but not that many authors have lived to be able to appreciate it.
